Five Orange County synagogues will join more than 700 across the country on Friday in a special service designed to combat what Jewish leaders call the “J2K problem”--a projected decline in members of the faith as a new century begins.

The National Jewish Outreach Program, sponsors of Shabbat Across America, hopes the event “will expose tens of thousands of Jews to one of our religion’s most beautiful practices and will empower them with a sense of connection to generations past and generations to come,” said Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald, founder and director of the program.

Orange County locations for the event:

* Chabad of West Orange County/Adat Israel, 5052 Warner Ave., Huntington Beach. (714) 846-2285.
