MAKING CONNECTIONS
Beginning July 1, students entering seventh grade in public or private school must have received the three-part hepatitis B vaccine, which is given over a four- to six-month period.
All three shots are necessary to ensure long-term protection against hepatitis B, which can cause cirrhosis of the liver, liver cancer and death.
Students who have started, but not completed the series will be admitted to school on a conditional basis, according to the California Department of Health Services. The school’s nurse will then follow up to ensure the student completes the series.
The immunization is being offered free at all county health clinics, including the following in the San Fernando Valley:
