* Explaining why Taiwan should not be included in an Asia-Pacific missile-defense umbrella, Vanessa Guest of the Council on Foreign Relations warns us very strongly against alienating China and obstructing the Clinton administration’s efforts to improve Sino-U.S. relations (Commentary, May 3). She spares no fear factor, from regional instability and nationalism to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, trying to make her case that we should just throw Taiwan under the Red Chinese train.
I don’t know when it became our policy to help the mainland Chinese regain control of Taiwan, but I suspect it happened sometime after the People’s Liberation Army’s bribe/campaign contribution to the 1996 DNC reelection effort.
