They Say the ‘Other Bishop’ Does Practice What He Preaches : Putting a New Date on a Lincoln Debate

While I’ve no doubt that Dr. Emil Seletz was as wonderful a neurosurgeon as he is a sculptor (“Lincoln Monumental,” by Ed Leibowitz, So SoCal, April 11), he should know that the series of great debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas were held during the Illinois Senate race of 1858 (which Douglas won) and not the presidential race of 1860 (in which Lincoln ran against Douglas and two others).

Of course, Lincoln’s rescue of the possibly apocryphal stranded pig may simply be the earliest recorded example of political mudslinging in U.S. history.
