From Staff and Wire Reports

Three Buena Park teenagers were arrested Monday in connection with a fake bomb found last week at John F. Kennedy High School in La Palma, police said.

The three boys, ages 15, 16 and 17, are suspected of placing the device in a restroom wash basin at the school, authorities said. The incident happened only three days after the school was evacuated in response to a sighting of a bomb-like device in a toilet.

The three suspects were interviewed at the La Palma Police Department and were expected to be booked at Juvenile Hall on felony charges of placing a facsimile destructive device on public property, authorities said.

La Palma Police Sgt. Mark Yokoyama said the device was a cylinder wrapped in black tape with wires and a battery attached.

“It looked very much like the real thing,” he said.

Yokoyama said he could not speculate on why the boys might have placed the fake bomb in the boys’ restroom.

“We don’t know what their motive was, whether they were trying to get out of school or get attention,” Yokoyama said. “But it’s something so stupid.”
