Campanella Honored as WSC Co-MVP

Outfielder John Campanella of Glendale College and catcher Octavio Martinez of Bakersfield have been selected the co-players of the year from the Western State Conference Southern Division. Infielder Aaron Davidson of Cuesta College was chosen the player of the year in the Northern Division.

First-team Northern Division selections included infielder Zach Gordon and outfielder Brandon Voorhees of Moorpark, and pitchers David Turner, Noah Lowry, David Arroyo and outfielder Nick Gontmahr of Ventura.

First-team Southern Division picks included catcher David Lusk, infielders Josh Harris, outfielder Covelli Crisp and pitcher Wes Crown of Pierce; infielders Anthony Fabrizio and Daniel Scott, outfielders Matt Hellman and John Campanella and pitchers Gerald De La Pena and Wes Hutchison of Glendale; infielder Sigi Arroyo of Valley; and infielder Mike Granger of Canyons.

* Thousand Oaks High has been awarded the Marmonte League’s Sportsmanship Award for the 1998-99 winter season. The award is based a votes of league schools on hospitality and the behavior of spectators, players, coaches, cheerleaders and staff.

* Women’s basketball player Elizabeth Hansell was selected The Master’s College women’s athlete of the year and basketball player Joclin Julmist and baseball player Kurt Fillmore shared the men’s athlete of the year award.

* Cal State Northridge women’s tennis players Isabella Peintner and Kendra Segura have been selected to the Big Sky All-Conference women’s tennis team.

Peintner, a junior, is a repeat selection.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Jayda Bailey of Birmingham High will not appeal last week’s decision denying her eligibility, Birmingham Coach Scott King said.

While at Taft, Bailey won the City Section championship in the 400 meters last year and the 800 in 1997. She transferred to El Camino Real in the fall and withdrew near the end of the semester.

BASEBALL

* Cal Lutheran (37-3) will face host Southwestern (41-7) in the first round of the Division III West Regional championships Thursday at Georgetown, Texas.

Cal Lutheran, champion of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, is seeded third in the four-team regional.

MISCELLANY

* Dan Gilmartin, coach and athletic director at Buckley School, has resigned to become athletic director at the Colorado Academy in Denver.
