A leadership program that helps citizens become involved in issues affecting Ventura County, from education to the military, is accepting applications for a nine-month-long class.

The Ventura County Leadership Academy will launch its fifth class in September. The class, sponsored by the United Way, aims to develop leaders who will work to enhance the quality of life in Ventura County, organizers said.

The public is invited to get more information on the class at a reception Thursday at the Ventura County Museum of History & Art. The meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m at the museum, 100 E. Main St., Ventura.

The academy is seeking people from all walks of life for the class, which begins in late September. Participants will attend a three-day opening session and then attend daylong focus sessions once a month. The class will also take a spring trip to Sacramento to meet with legislators and other state leaders.

Tuition is $850, but a reduced rate is available through June 10. Several scholarships are also available. Reservations for the reception are requested by Monday. For more information, call Harry Lee, academy executive director, at 485-6288, ext. 260.
