Raiders Sign Northridge Cornerback

Cornerback Donnell Day of Cal State Northridge signed as a free agent with the Oakland Raiders on Friday, Matador Coach Ron Ponciano said.

Ponciano said Day clocked 4.43 seconds over 40 yards during a recent tryout with several NFL scouts at Northridge.

Day, 5 feet 10 and 185 pounds, last season made 32 tackles and tied for the team lead in interceptions with three. He was an All-Big Sky Conference selection.

* Cornerback Maurice Law of St. Francis High is one of several players from the region selected to play in the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame’s 20th annual game July 9 at Arroyo High in El Monte.

Also on the West team are Clayton Milton and Mike Lynch of St. Francis, Derrel Furutani, Alex Bribeaux and Clint Radenbaugh of Crescenta Valley, Zarcit Khodadadian of Hoover and Angelo Walker of Glendale.

* Brent Trice, a 6-3, 235-pound junior running back and linebacker at San Pedro High, has transferred to Palmdale.

* St. Bonaventure High has picked up three transfers from Oxnard High--freshman running back Lorenzo Booker, sophomore linebacker Robert Otani and junior defensive lineman Junior Valenzuela.

* Davis Delmatoff, a former All-Southern Section quarterback at Hart High, has been selected offensive coordinator at Alemany.

BASKETBALL

* Jerry Mike, has been hired as girls’ coach at Valencia High.

Mike, coach and girls’ athletic director at Glendale High, replaces Greg Hayes, who resigned earlier this month for personal reasons.

BASEBALL

* Jesse Dechter, El Camino Real High’s starting center fielder, suffered a possible season-ending injury to his hand Thursday during an intrasquad scrimmage. Dechter was diving for a fly ball and might have torn ligaments in the hand.

Infielder John Voita, sidelined since breaking his shoulder in the opening game of the season, has been cleared by his doctor to return for the two-time defending City champion Conquistadores.

* Michael Frost of Campbell Hall, Steve Moss of Brentwood and David Weiner of Crossroads have been selected tri-players of the year in the Delphic League.

* Aaron Penberthy, Kurt Fillmore and Rob Avila of The Master’s College were selected to the NAIA All-Far West team.

SOFTBALL

* Mandi Comer , Julie DiFatta and Yvette McNally of Cal Lutheran were selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Assn. Division III second team. Teammate Julie Gerughty was chosen to the third team.
