MISSION VIEJO

The Planning Commission tonight will consider a proposal to build a 45-foot-tall cellular phone antenna disguised as a pine tree in a church parking lot at Oso and Marguerite parkways. The public hearing was put on hold in April after AirTouch Cellular officials learned about residents’ concerns that the antenna would be an eyesore.

AirTouch held a public meeting last month to deal with those concerns before going back to the commission. Although many residents and several homeowners association board members have told the city they support the antenna, indications are that some are still not satisfied with the plan. According to the report by associate planner Elaine Lister, staff believes the proposed antenna will blend with the surroundings and will not cause problems for the residents.

The antenna, proposed for the back of the parking lot at the Presbyterian Church of the Master on Marguerite Parkway, will have artificial tree branches for camouflage and screening. The commission meets at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 25909 Pala.
