It All Goes Wright for Diamond Bar
If there was any doubt about which team should be ranked No. 1 in Division II entering the Southern Section playoffs, defending champion and top-ranked Diamond Bar erased it with a 49-14 Sierra League victory over previously unbeaten and third-ranked La Verne Damien Friday night at Diamond Bar.
The Brahmas (9-0), who have a 20-game winning streak, clinched at least a share of the Sierra League championship and can clinch the title outright with a victory over Rowland next week.
Diamond Bar running back Jason Wright rushed for 205 of his 253 yards in the first half as Diamond Bar built a 35-14 lead.
Wright scored first-half touchdowns on runs of three, 40 and 65 yards and added a seven-yard scoring run with 8:39 left in the fourth quarter.
“The line opened great holes all night,” Wright said. “They did a textbook job. It was our best offensive game of the year.”
Dwight Wright, no relation, gained 84 yards in 12 carries and scored on a 21-yard run for Diamond Bar.
Quarterback Ryan Maine, playing in place of Don Sizemore, who was injured last week in the Brahmas’ victory over Nogales, completed two of three passes for 86 yards, with both completions going for touchdowns.
The first was a 69-yard scoring play to Dominic Robinson with 36 seconds left in the first half.
The second was a 17-yard throw to Felipe Garcia with 7:23 left in the third quarter.
Diamond Bar built a 21-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and was never threatened.
Damien (8-1), trailing 14-0, scored its first touchdown on an eight-yard pass from Ryan Lawrence to Tommy Bright.
Chris Moore scored Damien’s other touchdown on a 15-yard pass from Lawrence with 1:08 left in the first half.
