La Habra Secures Share of Freeway League Title
Josh Herrera rushed for 202 yards and scored two touchdowns to pace La Habra to a 38-20 victory over Sunny Hills in a Freeway League game Friday at Buena Park High.
La Habra’s victory guarantees the Highlanders at least a share of the league title for the first time in 11 years and propels them into the Southern Section playoffs for the first time since 1993.
“This proves that hard work pays off,” La Habra Coach Frank Mazzotta said. “Our kids worked their butts off and they deserve this.”
The Highlanders scored on all four of their first-half possessions as they built a 24-0 lead. Herrera, who has rushed for 1,649 yards and scored 22 touchdowns, ran for 149 yards in the first half and scored on runs of 16 and 13 yards.
With 43 seconds remaining in the second quarter, quarterback Randall Parra, who threw three touchdown passes, completed a 13-yard scoring pass to running back Marcus Arredondo that capped a nine-play 51-yard drive.
The Highlander defense also turned in a strong performance. Behind the standout play of Justin Moore-Brown and Jason Reese, La Habra limited Sunny Hills to 44 yards in the first half.
Sunny Hills scored on runs of 16 yards by James Drummond, 17 yards by Brandon Shepard and five yards by Zach Tune.
