Youth Session Looks at Tobacco, Media
About 65 middle school students are scheduled to attend a tobacco education conference from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.
The conference, titled “Blowing Smoke: Detecting and Rejecting Harmful Media Messages,” will take place at the River Ridge Golf Course, 2401 W. Vineyard Ave., in Oxnard.
David Considine, media studies coordinator at Appalachian State University, will show the seventh- and eighth-grade students how the use of imagery by the media can influence attitudes and behavior.
After the workshop, students will be encouraged to share the hands-on activities with classmates. Many of the students participating in the conference are involved in after-school advocacy clubs. The students attend schools in Camarillo, Oxnard, Santa Paula, Ventura and Fillmore.
