Nordhoff’s Long Touchdowns Break Open Game
John Hill’s 76-yard touchdown pass to Jon Hall three plays into the third quarter triggered a 22-point outburst for host Nordhoff High, which went on to defeat Whittier Christian, 44-21, in the first round of the Southern Section Division XI playoffs on Friday.
Nordhoff (9-2) trailed, 15-7, late in the second quarter before tying the score when Hill connected with Scott Drew for a 67-yard scoring pass.
Hill’s touchdown connection with Hall gave Nordhoff its first lead early in the third quarter.
Isaac Hatch of Nordhoff recovered a fumble by running back David Jones at the Whittier Christian 15-yard line later in the quarter. Bret Ferrante scored on a two-yard run to give the Rangers a 30-15 lead two plays later.
Jessie Hawkins ran 30 yards for a touchdown to give Nordhoff a 37-15 lead late in the third quarter. Hawkins rushed for 89 yards in 17 carries.
Hill completed five of six passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns.
