Chapman University named its stadium after trustee Irvin C. “Ernie” Chapman, 88, son of the university’s namesake, Charles C. Chapman. University officials believe that Ernie Chapman is the country’s longest-serving university trustee, having been a member of the board of trustees since 1936. During his college days at Chapman, then called California Christian College, Ernie Chapman served as student body president, played varsity football and graduated in 1933 with honors in sociology, history and political science.
