Chartrand’s No Shock to Murray
About the only people who weren’t surprised that Brad Chartrand made it through training camp and onto the King roster, establishing himself on the team’s fourth line, were Chartrand and Coach Andy Murray.
They have a history.
“He really hasn’t shown me anything I haven’t seen before,” Murray said Wednesday. “When you’re on a national team . . . you live together for nine months . . . and you get to know people.”
Murray knew Chartrand from two seasons with the Canadian national team, which Murray coached and for which Chartrand was a checking winger one season, a scorer the next.
He’s something of a late bloomer, his development courtesy of playing for the national team instead of the Manitoba Moose of the IHL, which was another option. Chartrand also had one season at St. John’s of the AHL.
“I consider myself having three years’ experience at playing pro-type hockey,” he said. “I think those two years with the national team helped me with my skills coming out of college.”

The Kings sent forward Dan Bylsma and defenseman Jaroslav Modry to Long Beach, but their stay will be a short one. Bylsma and Modry were scratched for the Kings’ first five games and played with the Ice Dogs on Wednesday night only to get ice time. They will rejoin the Kings for the trip to Calgary and Edmonton for games this weekend.

Rookie defenseman Fran Kaberle sat out Wednesday’s practice after straining a wrist in the Tuesday workout at the Staples Center. The Kings worked out Glen Murray at the point on the power play in case Kaberle is unable to play Friday at Calgary.
