Were it not for an injury to Phillip Torres, Michael Diggs of Channel Islands (2-4) might not have become the Raiders’ main offensive threat.

Diggs, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior, was a starting tight end and outside linebacker for the first 2 1/2 games of the season, but he rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns in six carries in the second half of a 31-18 loss to Moorpark in the third game after Torres, the starting running back, was injured.

That was followed by a 108-yard, three-touchdown effort against Calabasas, a 91-yard performance against Buena and a 151-yard, two-touchdown game in five carries against Rio Mesa last Friday.

His performance Friday was particularly noteworthy because it came in a 24-6 Pacific View League-opening victory.

“We knew he was a good athlete,” Coach Jack Willard said of Diggs. “But he played such a crucial role in our [double-wing T] offense at tight end that we didn’t want to move him to fullback.”

Diggs, who started at strong safety as a sophomore and at outside linebacker and tight end last year, is a sprinter on the track team. His speed has helped him rush for 456 yards and six touchdowns in 44 carries.
