As the teenager with the precociously powerful pipes tackles some of the greatest country songs ever, the first thing you notice is how much richer her voice has become. At 17, however, she still imitates rather than truly inhabits the deepest emotions of these heartbreak-heavy songs. The surprise standout on this album (in stores Tuesday), ironically, is the one new tune, Al Anderson and Jeffrey Steele’s “Big Deal,” a sassy number that fits her age and temperament to a T.
