Peter Schaefer had two goals and an assist and the Vancouver Canucks scored two short-handed goals in a 5-2 victory Tuesday night at Philadelphia that ended the Flyers’ winning streak at four games.

Philadelphia goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck’s streak of three consecutive shutouts also ended, but through no fault of his. The Flyers were plagued by giveaways and looked slow and sluggish at times against the younger, faster Canucks.

Markus Naslund had a goal and an assist, and goalie Kevin Weekes had 33 saves. Mark Messier added his fourth goal of the season, an empty-netter with 72 seconds left.

Atlanta 2, Calgary 1--Andrew Brunette scored on a rebound early in the second period and goaltender Damian Rhodes withstood a furious onslaught in the third as the Thrashers posted a franchise-first home victory.

The game marked the first meeting between the expansion Thrashers, who entered 0-3-1 at home, and the Flames, who first played in Atlanta from 1972-80.

Edmonton 3, Phoenix 1--Ethan Moreau had a goal and an assist at Edmonton as the Oilers ended a winless streak at three games.

Coyote right wing Rick Tocchet played the 1,000th game of his NHL career.
