Cardiac Cougars they are.

Ventura High, which is 7-0, has won its last three games by a combined seven points.

They beat Oxnard, 21-20, defeated San Marcos, 7-6, and downed Dos Pueblos, 26-21.

They also squeaked by Simi Valley in the opener, 27-21.

“We’re a touchdown or so away from being 3-4,” Coach Phil McCune of Ventura said.

The Cougars, 2-0 in the Channel League and headed for a showdown with Buena in a regular-season finale, have been limited on offense because of a thigh injury to running back Tyler Ebell.

Ebell rushed for over 100 yards in each of the Cougars’ first four games, but has been held under the same mark the last three games.

“Things he was doing early in the year, he can’t just do,” McCune said.

But the bottom line appears to be a good one for Ventura. Seven games, seven victories. At least they’re not the Comatose Cougars.

“The good news is we’re winning,” McCune said. “There’s a lot of people in the county who want to be where we are. The bad news is we’re winning ugly. We can’t keep flirting with disaster. Pretty soon it’s going to catch up.”
