Maclennan Advances With Upset
Alexandra Maclennan of Harvard-Westlake High upset third-seeded Samantha Waller of Cypress, 6-4, 6-2, on Friday in the quarterfinals of the girls’ 18s in the 55th annual Junior Rose Bowl tennis tournament at Pasadena High.
Fifth-seeded Georgette Wright of Burroughs defeated Gia Nafarrete, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, and Melissa Nguyen of Campbell Hall defeated Diana Friedland of Van Nuys, 6-1, 6-1, in other girls’ 18 matches.
In the girls’ 16 division, fifth-seeded Christine Dao of Northridge beat Taryn O’Neill of San Marino, 6-0, 6-0, and Sonja Reynolds of Palmdale defeated Olga Yepremian of Burbank, 6-1, 6-4.
Fourth-seeded Justin Montgomery of Oxnard defeated Vahe Assadourian of Glendale, 6-3, 7-5, and Adrian Mardyks of Camarillo beat Orrin Franko of Rancho Palos Verdes, 7-5, 6-0, in the boys’ 16s.
Garrett Wong of Thousand Oaks beat Gordon Hong, 7-5, 6-3, and Andrew Lieu of Thousand Oaks beat fifth-seeded Dustin Tsu of San Marino, 7-5, 6-4, the boys’ 18 division.
BOXING
* Heavyweight Lance Whitaker of Granada Hills has pulled out of his Nov. 6 fight at Atlantic City against Derek Jefferson for Whitaker’s World Boxing Council Continental Americas title.
Whitaker (18-1 with 18 knockouts) injured his left knee in training.
GOLF
* Rick Smith, head professional at Valencia Country Club for eight years, has been appointed to the same position at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Canyon Country, which is scheduled to open the first 18 of its 36 holes Dec. 11.
Dan Hernandez, former head pro at Industry Hills Golf Club and assistant to Smith the last 5 1/2 years, was promoted to head pro at Valencia.
