At least one person was killed and as many as two wounded, one of them critically, Saturday night in a car-to-car shooting on the Foothill Freeway in La Canada Flintridge, shutting down the freeway in both directions, sheriff’s officials said.

The shooting at 8:50 p.m. occurred in the westbound lanes between the Gould Avenue exit and Angeles Crest Highway, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Walter Wiley, watch commander at the sheriff’s La Crescenta station.

“Two vehicles were westbound on the 210 Freeway when one vehicle shot at another vehicle,” Wiley said. The assailant’s car was last seen speeding away in the westbound lanes.

The wounded were taken to local hospitals. Authorities from the Sheriff’s Department, county Fire Department and California Highway Patrol shut down traffic in both directions so they could search the scene for evidence and set up a command post.

Traffic was expected to be rerouted off the freeway for at least eight hours.

Sheriff’s officials said they were investigating the possibility that the shooting was gang-related, and said they were pursuing leads on the vehicle from which shots were fired.

“We’re trying to sort it all out,” Wiley said. “Witnesses were brought to the station and are being interviewed by detectives. They were in another car and saw the whole thing.”
