Sheriff’s homicide detectives arrested a Norwalk man and his 15-year-old stepson Wednesday in connection with the July 9 burning death of a woman in South Whittier.

The stepfather was identified as Michael Crosby, 36. He and the teenager, whose name was withheld, were both booked on suspicion of murder, said Sgt. Norine Plett.

Crosby also is being held in the Men’s Central Jail without bail for a probation violation, Plett said.

A resident near the area where the burning occurred led investigators to the suspects, Plett said.

The woman was set ablaze outside a machine shop in the 10700 block of Inez Avenue at 5:20 a.m. Witnesses heard the woman scream and beg for her life before she apparently was doused with a flammable liquid and set on fire.

Her charred body was found in shrubbery beside the machine shop.

The Sheriff’s Department did not reveal a motive for the attack.
