Sewer Line Rupture Forces Beach Closure
PACIFIC PALISADES — Los Angeles County health officials ordered a mile-long stretch of beach closed Tuesday after a ruptured sewer line spilled between 800 and 3,000 gallons of waste water into the sea.
The Department of Health Services closed the beach between Temescal Canyon Road and Sunset Boulevard at 10 a.m., when a temporary sewer line broke and spilled sewage into the Pulga storm drain, according to Richard Kebabjian, a department spokesman.
Health officials collected samples of the water after the spill, and tests for bacteria will be completed today. The beach will remain closed until the water samples show that bacteria meet state standards, Kebabjian said.
The ruptured sewer pipe was a temporary line that had been installed after a landslide. Officials characterized the spill as small, and said that workers stopped much of the leak from entering the storm drain. For information on beach conditions and closures, call (800) 525-5662.
