Running back Cedric Baker scored on three long touchdown runs to give Fontana a 27-13 victory over Servite Friday at Fontana High.

Baker finished with 247 yards in 16 carries.

His touchdown runs ended three drives that lasted a total of seven plays.

The Steelers accumulated 405 yards total offense and held Servite to 281.

Both teams also fell victim to numerous penalties, as the officials enforced a combined 24 infractions for 260 yards.

Steeler head coach Bob Spangel credited part of the victory to his team being in better condition.

“The first series of the third quarter would tell the difference for our team,” Spangel said. “Servite looked tired at halftime and I knew that it would be a matter of time before our speed would take over.”

Baker scored his second touchdown of the game on a 41-yard run with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. He eventually put the game away with a 52-yard scoring run with five seconds left in the quarter.

Servite (2-1) opened the fourth quarter by marching 61 yards to the Steeler 17-yard line. Friar running back Frank Magdaleno tried to convert on a fourth down and two, but was stopped for no gain by Fontana defensive back Angel Lopez with 7:46 remaining in the game.

After Fontana quarterback Larry Slaughter connected with Deondre Alexander on a 30-yard touchdown pass, Magdaleno scored his second touchdown of the game on a four-yard run with 1:31 left in the game.

Servite quarterback Adam Ernst completed 15 of 27 for 181 yards.

Despite the wide difference in total yards, Servite had more first downs than Fontana, 21-14, and held a five-minute advantage in time of possession.
