GIRLS’ TENNIS ROUNDUP : Lingman Back on Top of Game

Susanna Lingman is returning to form after a long layoff, and that was good news for the Woodbridge girls’ tennis team Tuesday.

Lingman’s sweep at No. 1 singles provided the Warriors with the deciding points in a 10-8 nonleague victory over visiting Dana Hills.

Lingman’s 6-2 victory over Dana Hills’ No. 1 Kate Romm gave the fifth-ranked Warriors a 4-2 lead after the first round and gave Lingman some much needed confidence.

“I felt more prepared for this match,” said Lingman, who recently returned from a five-month break from tournament tennis. “I started quicker today and I held on better.”

Two weeks ago--in Lingman’s first match back--she lost two of three sets to Corona del Mar as the Warriors were beaten on games.

“I played a lot better today,” Lingman said. “I was feeling good about the way I was playing coming into the match and it carried over.”

Lingman was coming off a junior title last weekend in Cerritos. She beat Brittany Reitz of Mater Dei in the finals.

But it wasn’t only Lingman who carried Woodbridge (2-1) to victory over fourth-ranked Dana Hills (4-1). The Warriors got an unexpected two points from Evie Soriano and Lindsay Rye at No. 1 doubles. Soriano and Rye beat Dana Hills’ No. 1 team of Catie Reames and Lauren Calton, 6-3, and No. 3 Kady Pooler and Kristin Bronowicki, 7-6, 7-1 after trailing both sets, 3-0.

Woodbridge also got two points from senior Adriana Hockicko and freshman Elizabeth Exon in singles and a point from the No. 3 doubles team of Haleh Fazeli and Danielle Kushner.

“There’s so many good teams around,” first-year Woodbridge Coach Ric Barth said. “It’s just a point here and a point there that decides these matches.”
