Remember, to Overcome

It’s crucial that we not forget the Aug. 10 shootings that left Joseph Ileto dead on his Chatsworth postal route and five women and children wounded at a Granada Hills Jewish community center. Remembering, although painful, keeps us vigilant against hate crimes.

But it’s just as important to remember the heroism displayed that day, which is what the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors did last week in honoring the police officers, paramedics and community center workers who rushed so quickly to aid the victims. Remembering these acts keeps us from despair.

That the community continues to unite around this tragedy--through events such as this and last week’s celebratory homecoming for the most seriously wounded child--is a powerful rejection of the call to hate.
