2. PENN STATE (5-0) beat Indiana, 45-24. Rashard Casey, Nittany Lion quarterback, on why he scrambles so much: “I always have happy feet, because I don’t like getting hit.” Next: at Iowa, Oct. 9.

3. FLORIDA (4-0) beat Kentucky, 38-10. Spurrier says days of beating Kentucky 73-7 and 65-0 are over. No matter. Score not as one-sided but Gators have won 13 in a row over Wildcats. Next: Alabama, Saturday.

4. MICHIGAN (4-0) beat Wisconsin, 21-16. After scoring on 45-yard double reverse, David Terrell says play was so deceptive, “Coach [Lloyd] Carr could have walked into the end zone on that one.” Next: Purdue, Saturday.

5. TEXAS A&M; (3-0) beat Southern Mississippi, 23-6. Aggies came into game averaging nearly 540 yards, but got their only two touchdowns on interception returns. Next: at Texas Tech, Saturday.

6. NEBRASKA (4-0) beat Missouri, 40-10. The Cornhuskers needed no last-minute heroics this time against the Tigers, who have lost 36 in a row to top-10 teams since 1981. Next: Oklahoma State, Saturday.

7. TENNESSEE (2-1) beat Memphis, 17-16. Hardly an encouraging victory for the defending national champions. Volunteers need last-minute score to avoid upset. Next: Auburn, Saturday.

8. VIRGINIA TECH (3-0) beat Clemson, 31-11 (Thursday). Clemson Coach Tommy Bowden says of Hokies’ Corey Moore, a 6-foot, 212-pound defensive end: “That’s a No. 1 draft pick coming after you.” Next: at Virginia, Saturday.

9. MIAMI (2-2) lost to East Carolina, 27-23. The Hurricanes blew a 20-point third-quarter lead to a team that hadn’t been home in more than a week because of Hurricane Floyd. Next: at Florida State, Oct. 9.

10. GEORGIA TECH (2-1) did not play. Yellow Jackets made a Rambling Wreck of Maryland last season in a 31-14 rout, but surprising Terrapins (3-0) will come into game with a better record. Next: Maryland, Thursday.

11. GEORGIA (3-0) beat Central Florida, 24-23. Bulldogs escape, but Coach Jim Donnan knows there’s trouble. “We’re not nearly good enough on defense to play in our league,” he says. Next: Louisiana State, Saturday.

12. OHIO STATE (3-1) beat Cincinnati, 34-20. Buckeyes unhappy after giving up 525 yards. “I don’t know if I have been in a tougher game,” says Coach John Cooper, whose team trailed, 17-3, in second quarter. Next: Wisconsin, Saturday.

13. PURDUE (4-0) beat Northwestern, 31-23. Purdon’t no more. The Boilermakers have won 10 in a row, one short of the school record set from 1928 to 1930. Next: at Michigan, Saturday.

14. ARKANSAS (2-1) lost to Alabama, 35-28. It’s a nutty game. “Any time the other team commits six turnovers, you should get the win,” says Arkansas Coach Houston Nutt. Not this time. Next: at Kentucky, Saturday.

15. KANSAS STATE (3-0) beat Iowa State, 35-28. Wildcats’ comeback from 28-7 deficit is biggest in Bill Snyder’s 11 seasons as coach. Tactic probably won’t work against Longhorns. Next: at Texas, Saturday.

16. USC (2-1) lost to Oregon, 33-30 (3OT). The Trojans and Ducks both suffered significant injuries--Oregon’s Reuben Droughns and USC’s Carson Palmer--in a game that was tied, 23-23, after regulation. Next: Oregon State, Saturday.

17. BRIGHAM YOUNG (2-1) lost to Virginia, 45-40. Venturing west of the Mississippi for the 11th time in their 111-year history, the Cavaliers win a shootout thanks to late interception in end zone. Next: at Utah State, Friday.

18. UCLA (2-2) lost to Stanford, 42-32. The spirit of Troy. Stanford receiver Walters has nine receptions for 278 yards and three touchdowns, including 98-yarder. Next: at Arizona State, Saturday.

19. MICHIGAN STATE (4-0) beat Illinois, 27-10. Spartan defense. Michigan State has not given up a rushing touchdown or more than 55 yards rushing in a game this season. Next: Iowa, Saturday.

20. WISCONSIN (2-2) lost to Michigan, 21-16. Ron Dayne criticized for another subpar performance in “big” game, but doesn’t 246 yards in Rose Bowl game count? Next: at Ohio State, Saturday.

21. MARSHALL (4-0) beat Temple, 34-0. Making its first start as a top-25 team, the Thundering Herd rolls to its 27th consecutive home victory. Next: at Miami of Ohio, Saturday.

22. TEXAS (4-1) beat Baylor, 62-0. Ah, the good ol’ days. The Longhorns’ first shutout since 1991 is the worst loss for Baylor since a 77-0 Texas blowout in 1913. Next: Kansas State, Saturday.

23. MISSISSIPPI STATE (4-0) beat South Carolina, 17-0. The Bulldogs are outgained by the winless Gamecocks, 296 yards to 181, but who cares? They’re 4-0 for the first time since 1965. Next: at Vanderbilt, Saturday.

24. AIR FORCE (2-1) lost to Wyoming, 10-7. Falcons finally land in top 25, but the stay won’t be long. Division I-A’s longest winning streak (11 games) is over. Next: at San Diego State, Saturday.

25. NORTH CAROLINA STATE (3-2) lost to Wake Forest, 31-7. Wolfpack quarterback Jamie Barnette, who turned the ball over six times last week against Florida State, fumbled on first two possessions. Next: Clemson, Saturday.
