A 24-year-old Oxnard man remained in serious but stable condition after he was shot in the arm Thursday morning after he stepped into his backyard to investigate a noise, authorities said.

Jose Juan Acevedo was shot about 10:30 a.m. at his home in the 1400 block of West Hill Street by an unidentified man who then fled, police said.

Acevedo said he did not know who shot him and it was not known why the man was in Acevedo’s backyard, said Oxnard Police Sgt. Marty Meyer.

Meyer found Acevedo in the backyard holding his arm with a family member at his side. The bullet penetrated Acevedo’s arm, then entered his chest before exiting his body, Meyer said.

Acevedo was expected to be moved into the intensive care unit at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.
