Sheriff Gets Metrolink Security Contract Again

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will continue to police Metrolink trains and assist with city rights of way under a new, $12.5-million contract approved Wednesday, the commuter rail line announced.

The three-year contract continues the sheriff’s law enforcement services for the rail line, which began five years ago.

The Sheriff’s Department conducts periodic on-board fare enforcement “sweeps” and also trains Metrolink conductors who check if fares are paid. The department also supervises Metrolink’s security guard services contract and conducts safety programs.

Under the new contract, the department also will be responsible for all fare enforcement on board trains with only a single conductor. Previously, fares were checked by two additional train conductors.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will pay $3.8 million of the contract because deputies also will be patrolling the rights of way in the county.

Metrolink operates 124 trains a day along six routes across Southern California, serving 47 stations and covering 416 miles.
