Southwest Unit to Play Simon, Zipper Hall

In the 2000-01 season, Southwest Chamber Music will inaugurate a series at the refurbished Norton Simon Theater at the Simon Museum in Pasadena and will continue its series in Zipper Hall at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, downtown. Nine separate programs comprise each of the two series; in addition, Southwest will again give four Open Rehearsals at the Pasadena Armory Center.

The season begins Sept. 23 in the Norton Simon Theater with a program of Milhaud’s “Creation du Monde,” William Kraft’s Kandinsky Variations and Schoenberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire.” This program will be repeated at the Colburn School on Sept. 26.

The performances on Oct. 24 (Colburn) and Oct. 28 (Simon) feature works by Takemitsu, Richard Cameron-Wolfe, Prokofiev, Hindemith and Poulenc.

Pianist Mari Kodama continues her Beethoven sonata cycle with two different programs to be given at the Colburn School, Nov. 28 and Dec. 12, and at the Simon Museum, Dec. 2 and 16.

The series resumes Feb. 10 and 13 with a program of two works, Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “The Zodiac--12 Melodies on the Constellations” and John Cage’s “Atlas Eclipticalis.”

On March 20 at the Colburn and March 23 in Pasadena, the agenda includes works by Ernst Krenek--in observance of his centenary--Gabrieli, Nono, Francesco da Milano and Takemitsu.

More Krenek compositions appear on the March 24 and 27 events, sharing the program with works by Machaut, Ockeghem and Dunstable.

Music by Peter Maxwell Davies, Brian Ferneyhough and Olivier Messiaen comprises the program to be given April 21 and April 24.

The season ends May 19 and 22 with music by Beethoven, Schoenberg, Webern, Terry Riley and Brahms.
