Candle Ceremony to Mourn Children

The Orange County chapter of the Compassionate Friends, an international support group for families who have lost a child, will hold a candle-lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. on Sunday.

The fourth annual event, which will be at Peninsula Park on the Balboa Pier, unites families across the world, who meet for one hour the second Sunday in December. Candles are first lit in New Zealand at 7 p.m. local time, and as the candles burn down in one time zone, they are lit in the next.

The Compassionate Friends will host a chat room and a message board on its Web site, www.compassionatefriends.org, for families to share their experiences on Sunday and post tributes.

“Our hope is that through this combined act, people will realize that they are not alone and that their child, grandchild or sibling is remembered during the difficult holiday season,” said Pat Loder, the Compassionate Friends interim executive director. Information: (949) 645-8889.
