28 Reportedly Die in Assam Massacre
GUWAHATI, India — Gunmen thought to be separatist guerrillas ambushed a group of workers and merchants Thursday, killing 28 people and wounding 14 in India’s remote northeast, police said.
Authorities in Assam said the victims were from the state’s Hindi-speaking minority. The gunmen ambushed three trucks carrying merchants and farm workers, spraying them with bullets, a police officer said. He said the victims were returning home after shopping.
No one claimed responsibility for the massacre near the town of Sadiya, about 270 miles northeast of Guwahati, the state capital.
On Wednesday, Assam’s top elected official, Prafullah Kumar Mahanta, blamed recent attacks on the United Liberation Front of Assam, which has been fighting for an independent homeland for more than 20 years. More than 10,000 people have been killed in the fighting.
