Industry Agency Buys Tonner Canyon Camp

Re “Sale of Scout Camp to Redevelopment Agency Draws Fire,” Dec. 4: I was appalled to read of the blatant conflict of interest evinced in the sale of the Tonner Canyon property to the city of Industry Urban Redevelopment Agency. Since Ed Roski owns most of the city of Industry already, I suppose it’s only a matter of time before this ecologically sensitive area is paved over for a shopping center or more office parks. It seems that developers will not be satisfied until every last inch of open space in Southern California is obliterated.

If L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe believes that he is representing Diamond Bar’s interests by maintaining Tonner Canyon for a roadway, then he is badly mistaken. The Diamond Bar general plan advisory committee recommended to the Diamond Bar City Council twice to preserve Tonner Canyon in its current state and oppose the development or placement of a roadway there. We had to recommend it twice because the City Council ignored it the first time, changed the general plan and so angered the citizens of Diamond Bar that a special election was called that rejected the plan that the City Council passed. The City Council changed it again after the general plan advisory committee was reconvened, which resulted in two City Council members being voted out.

Don, you’re listening to the wrong people!

Oh, and isn’t that a creep fault causing the lump in the 57 Freeway on the south side of Tonner Canyon? If I lived in Brea, I’d be screaming at the suggestion of a reservoir in this canyon!
