Two-Party System
Re “Bolster the Old System With Bonuses,” Commentary, Dec. 17:
Arthur Schlesinger states that direct presidential elections “would further weaken the already weak party system.” What on Earth is wrong with weakening a corrupt system that stifles independent opinions? Look what happened to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.): The only way to win the White House is to play inside the two parties, but this honest, patriotic and independent man was shot down by his own party. Perhaps if we had more than two options, more than half of all American adults would vote. To paraphrase a prominent third-party governor--the two parties are great; that’s one more party than they have in China.
