Team Going to State Academic Decathlon
Although Moorpark High School placed second in a recent Ventura County Academic Decathlon, the reigning national champion will compete in the statewide contest in Los Angeles next month.
Simi Valley High School won the contest with a score of 50,195 points out of a possible 60,000, but Moorpark’s score of 49,528 qualified it for the state contest as a wild-card entry.
“After Sunday, it was kind of disappointing,” said Moorpark’s team captain, Tiffany Chou, 17. “So now it’s really exciting to know that we have another level of competition.”
Moorpark co-coach Anna Karchem said she knew that the team’s score was competitive, but didn’t expect the school to be the top-scoring wild-card team.
Just a few days after the county contest, the team was back at work studying.
“We know we have a tough few weeks ahead, but we’re very excited,” she said.
The statewide competition is scheduled March 17-19 at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
