No Scores, but Spartans Are Century’s Best

The Century League finals Wednesday night were not about team scores but about advancing wrestlers to the the Southern Section Division I individual finals next week.

But if a winner had to be selected, since no official points were kept by officials or coaches at Santa Ana Valley, then the nod would be given to Villa Park. The Spartans qualified 13 wrestlers to section finals and finished with an unofficial 175 points. El Modena was second with 165 points.

“There really wasn’t any point to team scores,” said Villa Park Coach Steve Stewart, whose Spartans won the Century League dual-meet league title last week. “This is strictly a qualifying tournament for the Southern Section, and points are secondary.”

Villa Park had 11 finalists, with six winning their divisions.

The Spartans got pins from Tommy Peralta, who defeated Richard Aguilar of Canyon in 1 minute 43 seconds; Willie Parks (152), who beat El Modena’s Mark Hales in 3:30; and Jose Lopez (215), who won in 5:57 over Josh Raphael of El Modena.

El Modena had eight finalists, four of them champions, and qualified 11 to Southern Section finals.

“Villa Park won,” Clinton said. “But I’m happy we qualified so many.”

Bertine Tinoco (125) and Brady Fink (189) won by fall for El Modena.
