Penalty Kicks Put Dana Hills in Playoffs
After playing to a 1-1 tie through regulation, overtime and sudden death, Dana Hills won the South Coast League boys’ soccer third-place playoff game with Capistrano Valley on penalty kicks, 3-1, Saturday at Dana Hills High.
Goaltender Ricky Garcia stopped three of four penalty kicks to help the Dolphins (10-9-2, 5-3-3 in league) earn the league’s final automatic playoff berth.
Capistrano Valley (14-7-7, 4-4-3) took a 1-0 lead midway through the second half on Greg Smith’s unassisted goal. Dana Hills’ Forrest Smith scored the equalizer five minutes later.
In nonleague girls’ water polo:
Newport Harbor 8, Coronado 4--Katherine Belden scored five goals, Erin Kelly Bates had two goals and Kyndra Cox had one for visiting Newport Harbor, the eighth-ranked team in Orange County. Heather Deyden had 10 saves for the Sailors.
