Fullerton Defeats Las Vegas

Brett Kay homered and doubled, Chris Stringfellow drove in two runs and Steve Woodward had three hits and stole home to help Cal State Fullerton defeat visiting Nevada Las Vegas, 7-3, in a nonconference baseball game Saturday.

In his first start this season, winning pitcher Matt Sorensen went seven-plus innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts for Fullerton (4-5).

In the third inning, Woodward’s double scored David Bacani to give Fullerton a 3-1 lead. Woodward advanced to third on a fly out, then stole home for a 4-1 lead.

Fullerton extended the lead to 6-1 in the fourth when Mike Martinez tripled to score Craig Patterson and Stringfellow’s suicide squeeze scored Martinez.

UNLV (3-9) lost its sixth consecutive game. The teams are scheduled to conclude the three-game series at 1 p.m. today.

In another nonconference game:

Chapman 10, Vanguard 2--Tony Serna hit a three-run home run and Garrett Shourds pitched 4 2/3 innings of one-hit relief to earn the victory for Chapman (4-0). Vanguard is 1-7.

In nonconference softball:

Hope International 6-0, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1-1--Hope International’s Charity McMillan (3-0) pitched a complete game and had a two-run double in the first game.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis:

Vanguard 7, Redlands 0--Olli Helminen and Stefan Johansson won their singles matches and teamed to win in doubles, 8-6, for visiting Vanguard.

In the Big West Conference swimming and diving championships:

Irvine’s Crawford wins--Divers Jon Crawford (478.35 points) and James Frazee (350.65) took first and third in the men’s three-meter diving event for UC Irvine. Sara Showalter placed third in the women’s 200 breaststroke final (2 minutes 21.42 seconds) for Irvine.

In Big West Conference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, UC Santa Barbara 2--Chris Chung won at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-6, and teamed with Chris Ma to win in doubles, 9-8, for UC Irvine (6-2, 1-0).
