Cypress Turns Back Troy’s Late Charge

Cypress goalkeeper Angela Orr held off a dominating second-half attack by Troy and helped the Centurions to a 2-1 victory in a first-round Southern Section Division II girls’ soccer playoff game Saturday at Cypress.

The Warriors took 10 second-half shots and Orr had nine second-half saves, protecting the Centurions’ 2-0 lead until the final minute of the game.

Orr recorded two key saves on a bang-bang play with less than 10 minutes remaining. Troy’s Katie Ratican slammed a shot at the corner, and Orr dove to her left and knocked it away from the goal. Then she recovered in time to grab the rebound shot by Lauren Welch.

Cypress (15-5-2) controlled the first half, taking a 2-0 lead on goals by Melissa Steffe and Nicole Woimberghe.

Troy scored in injury time when Ratican sent a shot over Orr’s head. Cypress defender Bridget Brown headed the ball out of the goal but referees ruled the ball had crossed the goal line.

Cypress will play third-seeded Manhattan Beach Mira Costa Tuesday in the second round.
