The Los Angeles Times was denied permission by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences for a Times staff photographer to shoot the Grammy Awards ceremony, forcing The Times to rely on wire services. The Times was granted that permission in recent years, including 1999, whenever the awards have been held in Los Angeles. On Wednesday morning, a NARAS spokesman said access for photographers was limited because of fire marshal orders. But he, and another NARAS spokesman, also made note of The Times’ ongoing investigation of the academy’s philanthropic activities.
