Solid Picks; Still, Shania?

“Well, we have to give her something!”

That’s the only possible rationale for the inexplicable country song Grammy Award to Shania Twain’s hit “Come On Over,” less a song than a laundry list of motivating catch phrases she jotted down with her husband and producer, Robert John “Mutt” Lange.

Voters did find their way to deserving winners in other big country categories--from George Jones (male vocal) to Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton (country collaboration with vocals) and the Dixie Chicks (duo or group performance).

The logical conclusion for the song award, with a second to Twain for female vocal (“Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”), is that academy members simply couldn’t not reward her for an album that has now sold 12.5 million copies.

The album win for Dixie Chicks’ “Fly,” albeit predictable, honored a work that pushes the winsome trio’s music ahead, even if it falls short of the peaks Jones achieved on his “Cold Hard Truth.”

Finally, Asleep at the Wheellanded two Grammys for its spirited tribute to western swing pioneer Bob Wills, “Ride With Bob.”
