* PEPPERDINE (21-6, 11-1) at SAN DIEGO (17-8, 8-4), 7--San Diego did the Waves a favor last week by beating Gonzaga, 82-70, to put Pepperdine in sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference with two games to play. Now the Waves, winners of 13 of 14, must defeat the Toreros, who are in third place. Pepperdine has held opponents to 38% shooting in its last 14 games. “Strong defense has been the constant for us,” said Coach Jan van Breda Kolff, who became only the second coach to win 20 games in his first season at Pepperdine. The Waves are second in the WCC in scoring defense at 64 points a game. San Diego is first at 62.7.
