Three Concordia Track Athletes Honored

Concordia athletes claimed three All-American honors at the NAIA indoor track and field championships in Lincoln, Neb., Saturday.

Junior Tricia Mattson finished fourth in the mile (5:01.31), breaking a school record by four seconds.

Junior Mindy Brown placed third in the 5,000 meters, the highest individual finisher in school history, and junior Rachel Lafady placed sixth (18:03.55).

The NAIA awards All-American honors through the first six spots in each event.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Concordia 23-11, Cal Baptist 14-7--In the first game, Concordia tied its single-game record of 23 runs and broke the school record for hits in a game with 23. The Eagles’ Charles Chatman, Rick Stockton, Jeff Curcio and Derek Patterson each had three hits.

In the second game, Nick Swanson homered and Matt Broesamle drove in three runs for the Eagles (9-9, 4-6).

Point Loma Nazarene 7-10, Vanguard 3-0--Visiting Vanguard (2-10, 1-7) managed only three hits in the second game of the doubleheader sweep. In the first game, James Dent hit a solo home run and Adam Steckler and Shane Lariba each had a hit and an RBI for the Lions.

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 13, Cal State Hayward 1--Host Chapman (5-1) had 18 hits, including three each from Brandon Maciel, Mike Caira and Alex Taylor, with Taylor hitting his first home run of the year.

Pitchers Erik Maurer and Andrew Tisdale combined to four-hit Hayward (1-6).

In the Oklahoma softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 2, Creighton 0--Starting pitcher Gina Oaks went five innings, striking out 10, before leaving with an injured knee. Christy Robitaille pitched two scoreless innings in relief to get the save for Fullerton (13-2). In a later game, the Titans defeated Mississippi, 5-0, as Monica Lucatero had three hits and three RBIs. Pitcher Jodie Cox struck out seven and allowed five hits for Fullerton (14-2).

In nonconference softball:

Hope International 14, Bethany College 0 (5, mercy rule)--Hope International (8-4) had 15 hits and scored in every inning. Pitchers Jody Richards and Jamie McNamara combined on the shutout, holding Bethany to two hits. Earlier, the Royals lost to Simon Fraser, 10-3.

Vanguard 2-3, UC San Diego 0-4--In the first game, Stacey Caggiano’s two-run single in the top of the sixth broke a scoreless tie as Vanguard handed UC San Diego its first loss of the season. In the second game, Vanguard’s Valerie Vanaken hit a three-run home run.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 4, Rice 3--UCI’s David Matthew fought off five match points and defeated Fabien Giraud, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6, in the deciding match. The Anteaters, who fell behind, 3-0, won the last four matches to improve to 7-2.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

UCLA 3, UC Irvine 1--Irvine had five players record double-digit kills in the 15-12, 15-8, 10-15, 15-3 loss. Erick Helenihi had 26 and Ty Loomis had 24. Monte Tucker and Kevin Reid each had 13 kills. Sixth-ranked UCLA (13-3, 7-3) got 21 kills each from Evan Thatcher and Mark Williams.
