Mission San Juan Capistrano is showcasing Orange County artwork and artifacts from 1820 to 1900 in its first major exhibition in more than 10 years.

The Celebrating Cultural Connections exhibition, which opened Saturday, features a collection that includes paintings, musical instruments, clothing, maps, journals, photographs, fans, trunks and a piano.

Jim Graves, a spokesman for the mission, said the exhibit is significant because it will be the first time relics from the rancho period and beyond, 1820-1900, will be displayed at the mission.
