Teens to Conclude UCSB Prep Academy
About 40 high school juniors from Ventura County will finish a weeklong summer institute at UC Santa Barbara today.
The college-bound teens were among 100 students from Southern California who spent the week at the university’s Prep Academy, designed to give students a better chance of getting into a University of California campus after graduation. The remaining students were from Kern, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties.
During the program the students received tips on how to study for the Scholastic Aptitude Test and how to get into college. They also stayed at a college dormitory and attended several social activities, including a beach barbecue and movie night.
The closing ceremonies are today at 8 p.m. in Room 1004 of Grivetz Hall on the UCSB campus.
The students are all high-achievers, and many are from low-income families or represent ethnic groups that are underrepresented on UC campuses. The cost of attending the academy is $375, but scholarships were available.
The academy was overseen by UC Santa Barbara Early Academic Outreach Program, which helps low-income and minority students meet UC admissions requirements.
