Ukraine’s Ex-Premier Guilty in Money Trial

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko has been convicted of money-laundering by a Swiss court that confiscated nearly $6.6 million from his Swiss bank accounts, his attorney said. Lazarenko, 47, also received an 18-month suspended prison term, said his attorney, Paul Gully-Hart. Lazarenko is in a federal prison in Northern California, where he faces charges of laundering $114 million allegedly stolen while in office. The verdict handed down late Thursday by a three-judge lower court in Geneva credited Lazarenko with time served in the U.S., where he has been detained since February 1999. Lazarenko was prime minister from May 1996 to June 1997.
