Murl Barrow, a former teacher and hospital aide, has died at the age of 87.

Barrow, who died June 30 at her home in Ojai, was born March 3, 1913, to a share-cropping family in Annona, Texas. During the Depression she moved to Dallas and worked in a sewing room.

In 1930, she married schoolteacher Joe Galloway, and later taught school herself for a while.

When Galloway died in 1956, she moved with her son Binom to California to be nearer to another son, Jack, and a daughter, Janelle, who lived in Ventura.

In the Ojai area, she was known to be an expert seamstress and baker. The staff and patients at Ojai Valley Community Hospital and the Acacia Care Center, where she worked, enjoyed her coconut and lemon meringue pies, family members said.

She was also active in the Church of Christ in Ojai and Oak View before her health failed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Barrow, on Dec. 10, 1991.

She is survived by sons Jack and Binom Galloway of Ojai and daughter Janelle Gilson of Ojai; three sisters, Lillian Cooper, Bonnie Leda Simpson and Estelle Devito of Fort Worth, Texas; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services have been held.

Memorial donations in her name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assn. in Oxnard.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
