Damage Awards

“Juries Aren’t Just Emotional Pushovers” (Commentary, July 6) doesn’t change the facts--that many punitive damage awards are exorbitant and unjust because there is no set method in determining these awards, leaving the system open for abuse.

When businesses are socked with these outrageous punitive awards, they end up having to raise the prices of their goods or services. That means the consumer winds up paying the price for these damage awards.

As long as a disparity exists regarding what is considered a fair and balanced amount for a punitive damage award, our civil justice system will need to impose clearer guidelines for determining punitive damages for juries and judges alike.
