The City Council is scheduled tonight to consider establishing a subcommittee to address the city’s water quality problems.

The proposed Dana Point Clean Beaches Subcommittee would include two council members, who will be selected tonight if the subcommittee is approved.

The group would be to monitor ocean water quality, establish programs to clean the local beaches and serve as a liaison to the regional water quality boards.

The city’s beaches have been closed nine times this year because of high bacteria levels in the water. In most cases, the contamination was due to spills from local sewer lines.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall council chambers at 33282 Golden Lantern.
