Verizon Launches Web Service for Wireless Phones
Verizon Wireless will launch its nationwide mobile Web service today, adding another choice for consumers who want access to electronic mail and selected Internet offerings from their wireless phones.
The company was created three months ago by combining GTE Wireless, AirTouch Cellular, PrimeCo PCS, AirTouch Paging and Bell Atlantic Mobile into a nationwide network. Verizon’s new “Mobile Web” service is available on select phones and can be added to any digital service plan for an extra $6.95 per month.
Verizon’s service is initially available in 24 U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Sacramento. With the entry of Verizon Wireless, nearly all the major U.S. mobile phone carriers offer access to Internet content that has been modified for display on a wireless phone.
